GreenFiber Attic Insulation: The Austin Owner’s Guide
We stock and install GreenFiber attic insulation throughout Austin, with most whole-attic jobs running $1,450 to $3,200 depending on square footage and current R-value. Same-day and next-day installation is available across most of the metro, from Round Rock down to Buda. The way most Austin homeowners discover their GreenFiber insulation has failed is quiet: a summer electric bill that jumps $60 to $90 a month, a bedroom that won’t hold temperature, or a ceiling that feels warm to the touch in August. None of those are dramatic, but all of them mean your attic isn’t doing its job.

Garrett Sloane and our crew at Aspen Attic Insulation Austin have pulled failed GreenFiber out of attics all over this city. We’re an independent insulation contractor, not affiliated with GreenFiber, and we carry their blown-in cellulose alongside seven other brands so the product going back in matches what your house actually needs.
Which GreenFiber Models This Applies To
GreenFiber produces blown-in cellulose insulation under a few product lines you’ll likely see on an old install invoice or the bag left in your attic: SANCTUARY, Insulation Plus, and their standard Cellulose Insulation line. All three are loose-fill products that get blown into the attic cavity, but they differ in settled density and R-value per inch. SANCTUARY runs about R-3.7 per inch. Insulation Plus is closer to R-3.4. The standard line settles to R-3.2 to R-3.4 depending on how it was installed and how much it has compacted since.
Here’s the compatibility gotcha most homeowners don’t know: GreenFiber cellulose settles over time, losing up to 20% of its installed height. So an attic blown to R-38 in 2009 is likely performing at R-30 or less today, even if nothing “failed” mechanically. Our techs measure actual settled depth with a ruler at multiple points across the attic, then calculate what needs to be added to hit code. We don’t guess, and we don’t just top off to “look full.”
For GreenFiber specifically, there’s no meaningful aftermarket equivalent: blown-in cellulose is the aftermarket, since any brand meeting the same ASTM standards performs similarly. But we stock GreenFiber on the truck because Austin attics originally insulated with it are often better matched with the same product rather than mixing fiber types. If you have a bag label, great. If not, we identify what’s there by looking at it.
Signs Your GreenFiber Attic Insulation Is Failing
- Rooms directly under the attic run 5 to 8 degrees warmer than the rest of the house. This usually means the cellulose has settled or shifted, leaving thin spots directly above those rooms. We see this constantly in two-story homes near Westlake and older ranches in Allandale.
- Your upstairs AC runs almost nonstop from June through September. Heat pours through an under-insulated attic and the system never catches up. Austin’s 100-degree afternoons turn a settled attic into a heat radiator aimed at your ceiling.
- You can see bare drywall or rafters poking through the insulation. If you stick your head up there and see the ceiling joists clearly, you’ve lost meaningful coverage. GreenFiber should completely bury the joists at proper depth.
- Mystery damp spots or musty smells in the attic. Cellulose absorbs moisture. If a roof leak or poor bathroom venting introduced water, the GreenFiber can clump, compress, and stop insulating where it’s wet. In Austin’s humidity, this also invites mold.
- Pests have tunneled through it. Squirrels and rats love burrowing through loose-fill cellulose. We regularly remove GreenFiber that’s been chewed, nested in, and flattened to the point it’s doing nothing.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
GreenFiber attic insulation replacement or top-off in Austin runs $1,450 to $3,200 for a typical 1,200 to 2,000 square foot single-story home. Smaller attics can come in under that. Larger or two-story homes run higher. The range depends on current depth, whether we’re topping off or doing a full removal-and-replace, and how much air sealing you need first.
Every quote includes parts, labor, cleanup, and haul-away of old material if we’re removing it. You get a written price before any work starts, no exceptions. That price is what you pay.
The work is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise: if it’s not right, we return and make it right, free, within a year. That’s in writing on every job.

What you can safely check yourself: peek into the attic and measure how deep the GreenFiber sits. R-38 means roughly 10 to 11 inches of settled cellulose. R-49 means about 13 to 14. If you’re well under those numbers, the insulation has settled and you’re paying for it every month.
What you shouldn’t do yourself: blowing new cellulose requires a commercial blower, a second person feeding the hopper, proper dust protection, and real technique. Get the coverage uneven and you’ll have the same problem next summer, just with new material. And if there’s any wiring up there that’s older or questionable, burying it under fresh cellulose is a fire risk we’d rather inspect first. We also check for air leaks and venting issues before we blow anything in, because insulating over an unfixed problem just hides it better.

FAQs
GreenFiber cellulose typically performs well for 20 to 30 years, but Austin’s heat cycle accelerates settling, and most attics we inspect need a top-off by year 15. Ceiling leaks, pests, or poor venting can cut that lifespan dramatically. Call (325) 246-2929 and we’ll measure what you actually have.
In most Austin homes, the answer is a top-off rather than a full replacement: we remove nothing, blow fresh GreenFiber over the settled material to restore R-value, and correct any air sealing issues. Full replacement is only needed when the existing cellulose is wet, moldy, or pest-damaged. Estimates are free.
A standard Austin attic top-off takes 3 to 5 hours from truck arrival to cleanup. Full removal and replacement runs a full day for most homes. We’ll tell you the timeline before we start.
Yes. We keep GreenFiber bags loaded on our trucks alongside Owens Corning, Johns Manville, Knauf, Rockwool, CertainTeed, Icynene, Demilec, and Reflectix so we can match whatever your attic needs without a second trip.
If your attic’s working against you, your AC never wins. Call (325) 246-2929 for a free GreenFiber insulation estimate in Austin. We’ll send a tech whose name and photo you’ll have before they knock.
